Tamil cinema has got some tremendous actors who gave out their body, heart and soul to a film and performed in the best possible way. And, many male artistes have performed as a female or a transgender in movies. While some actors have performed such roles for a song or a particular sequence in a film, many actors have performed as the other gennder throughout the film. 

It’s not an easy task to take up such a role and make it look so realistic that we forget that the performer is of the other gender. Let’s take a look at some films where the heroes have transformed into a lady or a transgender.

Actor Kamal Haasan is of course the universal actor who breathes cinema as oxygen.  He almost dedicated everything in his life to cinema. The actor has worn prosthetic makeup n number of times. Avvai Shanmughi is one film that had him perform as an old lady. The actor had to change his voice, body language, and everything else for the film. Though his performance was compared with  Robin Williams’s performance in Mrs. Doubtfire, Kamal Haasan gave a more Indian touch to the character and performed it well on screen. Kamal had also performed as an old lady in one of his later films Dasavathaaram.

Another actor who gives his body and soul for cinema is actor Vikram. He physically challenges his body for a character and shows a lot of transformation in one film. Acting as a is more like a cakewalk for Vikram. But the actor went to the extra extent of putting on some makeup for a character in Iru Mugan that made him look completely different. Later when the film was released he was asked about why he took such efforts for the film, the just simply dais it was the director’s vision to show the difference between both the characters so I accepted it as it came.
