Jasprit Bumrah Likely To Miss Asia Cup 2025 As India – Know The Reason

India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to feature in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, with team management and selectors leaning toward resting him in order to manage his workload ahead of a busy Test calendar.

According to recent reports, the BCCI allowed Bumrah to leave India’s Test squad during their England tour, where he was rested for the final match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. The move was made to avoid any potential injury risk after a demanding stretch of cricket.

Heavy Workload Taking a Toll

Bumrah played a key role in India’s England series, bowling close to 120 overs across the first three Tests and taking 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. However, signs of fatigue were evident in the third Test, where he conceded over 100 runs in an innings for the first time in his career—an unusual dip for a bowler known for his control and economy.

Well before the series began, India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar and new head coach Gautam Gambhir had already indicated that Bumrah would not play all five Tests, aiming to keep him fresh for the bigger challenges ahead.

Asia Cup or WTC? Selectors Face a Tough Call

With the Asia Cup scheduled to begin on September 9, and a crucial Test series against the West Indies set to start shortly after, Bumrah may be rested for the T20 tournament to keep him fit for red-ball cricket. India’s opening Asia Cup match is on September 10 against UAE, followed by a blockbuster clash with Pakistan on September 14.

A BCCI source, speaking to PTI, acknowledged the dilemma:

“It’s a tricky decision, but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20Is go, he can return for the New Zealand series in January, which will act as a build-up to the T20 World Cup.”

Eyes on the Bigger Picture

The selectors are reportedly considering a strategy where Bumrah will focus mainly on Test matches in the near future, skipping most white-ball games, including ODIs, in the lead-up to the 2026 T20 World Cup. His return to the T20 format is likely to come during India’s home series against New Zealand in January, which will serve as a preparatory stage for the World Cup.

This cautious approach may also impact his availability for India’s Test series in South Africa later this year, depending on how his fitness evolves and the team’s workload management strategy.

As of now, the final decision will rest with Agarkar and Gambhir, who are weighing the importance of preserving Bumrah’s long-term fitness against the immediate demands of the Asia Cup.

While his absence would be a blow to India’s T20 campaign, the team remains in strong form and well-equipped to make a deep run in the tournament. For Bumrah, however, the focus appears firmly set on staying fit for the Tests that matter most.
