Iran war, Taiwan and trade: Donald Trump leaves for China to Meet Xi Jinping – Know what’s on agenda

US President Donald Trump is travelling to China for a major meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit is being closely watched because it could affect relations between the world’s two biggest economies. Trump will arrive in Beijing on Wednesday for his first state visit to China since 2017, during his first term in office. The two leaders are expected to hold talks at the Great Hall of the People, visit the Temple of Heaven and attend official meals together.

The meeting comes at a difficult time for the United States, which is facing pressure from the economic impact of the Middle East war and continuing trade disputes.

Will The Iran War Be The Main Topic?

The ongoing conflict involving Iran is expected to be one of the biggest issues during the talks. Trump is likely to ask China to encourage Iran to reach an agreement with Washington in an effort to end the war. China has strong ties with Iran and buys large amounts of Iranian oil. Rising oil prices caused by the conflict have affected the US economy more than China’s and have also hurt Trump politically.

The war has also forced the US to move military resources away from the Indo-Pacific region, which has indirectly helped China. Although Trump said Xi wants the crisis to end, there are still doubts about whether peace talks will succeed. Reports suggest Trump is considering stronger military action after Iran rejected a recent ceasefire proposal.

Why Is Taiwan Still Causing Tension?

Another major issue is Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory. The US continues to support Taiwan and provide weapons to the island. Last year, the Trump administration approved an arms package worth around $11 billion, including missiles and rocket systems.

China strongly criticised the decision and said Taiwan is at the centre of China-US relations. Beijing is expected to push Washington for concessions on Taiwan during the talks. Some experts fear that any agreement on Taiwan could encourage China to take tougher action against the island in the future.

What Is Happening With US-China Trade?

Trade is also expected to be high on the agenda. Trump’s second term began with heavy tariffs on Chinese goods, while China responded by restricting exports of rare earth materials that are important for US industries.

However, relations improved slightly after Trump and Xi briefly met in South Korea earlier this year. Trump’s tariff policies have also faced legal challenges in the US. American courts recently ruled that some of his global tariffs were unlawful.

China wants easier access to American technology and relief from export restrictions. Meanwhile, the US wants China to buy more American products and invest more in the American economy. China is expected to announce purchases of Boeing aircraft, American farm products and energy supplies during the visit.

Could Nuclear Weapons Talks Take Place?

The US has long wanted China to join discussions about nuclear weapons and arms control. However, Beijing has so far refused to hold detailed talks about its nuclear programme.

Even so, both countries are expected to continue discussions on trade, security and investment during Trump’s visit.
