IPL: What’s The Reason Behind Chandrakant Pandit’s Exit From KKR Despite Having Good Tenure?

Two years of stewardship later, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have formally ended their relationship with head coach Chandrakant Pandit, a move which has come in the aftermath of a poor IPL 2025 season. The news, announced on Tuesday by the franchise, puts an end to a stint which had experienced both spectacular highs and somber lows.

Pandit, well regarded in Indian domestic cricket, was appointed before IPL 2023 with the hope of bringing some sense of discipline and organization into a team that had been inconsistent. His first season was anything but perfect though – KKR ended up seventh in the table, with main captain Shreyas Iyer out injured and the team unable to find any kind of rhythm.

The resurgence came in 2024. With Iyer restored to captaincy and franchise legend Gautam Gambhir also coming back as mentor, KKR stormed back into their previous form. Led by Pandit, the side not only won their third IPL title but also ended the league phase with their highest-ever points total and net run rate. It was a statement season, one that appeared to usher in a new era of dominance.

But the glory was fleeting

The season in 2025 was a flip-flop in fortunes. After a high-stakes mega auction, KKR couldn’t recreate last year’s togetherness. Even with a team full of promise, the team failed to gel. They won only five out of 14 games and ended at eighth place – their worst-ever finish in IPL history. With two games remaining in the season, they were already out of contention for the playoffs.

But with the curtains closed, there was some going on in the background. There were reports of a growing gulf between the management of the team and some senior players. The same inflexibility that earlier helped them achieve success now became their stumbling block in the fast-changing T20 scenario.

The franchise made it official on Tuesday. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), KKR said:

“Mr. Chandrakant Pandit has chosen to pursue new challenges and will not remain Head Coach of Kolkata Knight Riders.”

They further stated, “We appreciate his rich inputs – taking KKR to IPL Championship in 2024 and assisting the team in developing a robust and tough team. His leadership and discipline have had a lasting impression on the team. We wish him all the very best for the future.”

Though the statement presented the departure as a two-way street, it’s certain that the poor performance in 2025 hung heavily on the franchise’s shoulders. In top-tier T20 competitions such as the IPL, success is ephemeral, and the pressure to evolve constant.

Chandrakant Pandit has behind him a dual legacy one of an abiding title run but also one of the travails that followed. While KKR look to a fresh coaching arrangement for IPL 2026, Pandit, too, will do well to turn over a new leaf and test newer waters, possibly in an assignment more attuned to his strength as a disciplinarian and motivational coach.

Only time will say where both sides go from here but meanwhile, a major chapter in the KKR saga has closed.
