Prime Minister Narendra Modi  paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary and stressed on unity among people saying only a “united country can attain its goals”.

Speaking at the ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ function being held at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia in Gujarat’s Narmada district.

The Prime Minister, who is on a five-day visit to Italy and the UK till November 2, was addressing the event virtually.

“Today the nation is paying tribute to Sardar Patel who gave his life for ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshth Bharat’. Sardar Patel lives not only in history but also the hearts of all Indians,” he said.

“Strong foundation of democracy that developed in the society and traditions of India, prospered the sense of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshth Bharat’. But we must also remember that all the passengers sitting in a boat have to take care of the boat. We can go ahead only if we stay united,” he added.

He further said that inspired by Sardar Patel, India today is fully capable to meet any internal or external challenge.

PM Modi also underlined that India’s capabilities and resolve are now unprecedented on every front, be it land, water, air, space.

“India isn’t just a geographical unit. It’s a nation that iss full of the standards of ideals, resolutions, civilisation, culture. The land where we 130 crore Indians live, is an integral part of our soul, our dreams, our aspirations,” he said.

“Our goals can only be met if we stay united. Sardar Patel always wanted India to be strong, inclusive, sensitive, alert, polite and developed. He always gave importance to nation’s interest,” he added.

PM Modi cited India’s fight against COVID-19 as an example of ‘sabka prayas’ (everyone’s effort).

Amit Shah pays homage to Sardar Patel

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also participated in the function and paid tribute to Sardar Patel on his birth anniversary.

“After independence, while leaving, Britishers had conspired to divide into several pieces. Sardar Patel foiled that conspiracy and resolved to make ‘Akhand Bharat’,” he said.

“Kevadia is not just the name of a place, it has become a shrine – a shrine of national unity, of patriotism. This sky-high statue of Sardar Patel is giving a message to the world that India’s future is bright, that nobody can damage the unity and integrity of India,” he added.

The Union Home Minister further said that Sardar Patel gave a message to the world that no one can destroy India’s unity and integrity.

Shah also alleged that attempts were made to forget Sardar Patel, saying that his contributions were not given due respect after independence. “He was neither given Bharat Ratna nor proper respect. Situation changed. He was given Bharat Ratna and this world’s tallest statue is before us to see,” he said.
