Injury Blow To South Africa! Anrich Nortje’s Fractured Toe Rules Him Out Of T20Is

Anrich Nortje has been officially ruled out of South Africa’s ongoing T20I series against Pakistan after suffering a fracture to the big toe on his left foot. Initially, Nortje missed the opening match with what was described as “a contusion,” but further scans confirmed the injury as a fracture. The star fast bowler will now consult an orthopedic specialist to determine the timeline for his recovery.

To fill the void for the remaining two matches on Friday and Saturday, uncapped seamer Dayyaan Galiem has been added to South Africa’s T20I squad.

Nortje’s Recent Injury History and International Plans

Nortje last featured in competitive cricket during the Abu Dhabi T10 earlier this month. However, he hasn’t played in an international match since the T20 World Cup final in June. The injury comes as he was expected to play a vital role in white-ball coach Rob Walter’s plans, with a focus on the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy next year. Nortje is unlikely to feature in the three-match ODI series against Pakistan starting next Tuesday.

Looking ahead, Nortje could gain valuable match fitness before the Champions Trophy selection by participating in the upcoming SA20 tournament, which begins on January 10. Nortje is contracted with the Pretoria Capitals for the T20 league.

A Tough Run of Injuries for Nortje

This marks the second significant injury for the bowler in the last 15 months. Nortje was sidelined for nine months starting September 2023 due to a stress fracture. He made his return during IPL 2024 and was a key player in South Africa’s T20 World Cup campaign, finishing as the team’s highest wicket-taker.

Nortje recently opted out of a national contract with Cricket South Africa as he continues managing his fitness post-injury while also stepping back from red-ball cricket for the time being.

South Africa’s Growing Injury List

Nortje’s absence adds to South Africa’s mounting injury concerns. Fast bowlers Gerald Coetzee and Lungi Ngidi are out until January due to groin and hip issues, respectively. Meanwhile, Nandre Burger has been ruled out for the entire summer with a lower back stress fracture, and Wiaan Mulder remains a race against time to return after breaking a finger. Mulder’s fitness will be crucial for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan.

This injury setback highlights the challenges facing South Africa as they prepare for the remainder of their series against Pakistan and plan for the months ahead.
