India  recorded 1,96,427 new coronavirus cases, the first time in over a month that the daily spike has dropped below the 2 lakh-mark. The country had on April 14 recorded 2,00,739 cases.

However, the death toll continued to paint a grim picture as 3,511 people died in the past 24 hours due to the deadly Covid-19 virus, taking the total fatality figure to 3,07,231, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Tuesday.

With the new rise in infections, the country’s overall caseload has increased to 2,69,48,874. There are currently 25,86,782 active cases in the country.

There were 3,26,850 discharges from hospitals and medical facilities in the past one day, taking the total discharges to 2,40,54,861.

India crossed the three-lakh mark of fatalities on Monday, hence becoming the world’s third country after the United States and Brazil to cross the grim milestone.

The country recorded over 50,000 deaths in just the past 13 days.

The Health Ministry has stated that a total of 19,85,38,999 people have been vaccinated across the country so far, including 24,40,236 in the past 24 hours.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 33,25,94,176 samples have been tested up to May 24 for Covid-19, of which 20,58,112 samples were tested on Monday alone.

India registered record number of deaths due to Covid last Wednesday when 4,529 people succumbed to the deadly virus – the highest one-day fatality figure for any country since the outbreak in China’s Wuhan in December 2019.

The single-day death toll crossed the tally of 4,468 deaths the US recorded on January 12, and 4,211 in Brazil on April 6.

India is currently dealing with a devastating second wave of the coronavirus outbreak, forcing several states to go into a month-long lockdown to break the chain of transmission.

The country saw record high cases of 4,14,188 on May 7.
