India’s Kabaddi Star Deepak Hooda Faces Dowry Harassment Charges

Hisar police have registered a case against BJP leader and former Indian kabaddi team captain Deepak Niwas Hooda and his sister Poonam on the charges of dowry harassment. The case was registered by Deepak’s wife and world championships gold medalist boxer Saweety Boora. The police have registered the case against them under different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita like causing hurt, criminal breach of trust, criminal intimidation, and cruelty by husband or relatives.

Allegations Raised By Saweety Boora

Saweety in her complaint to Hisar SP Shashank Kumar Sawan has described sustained abuse since marriage with Deepak in 2022. According to her, four days prior to the wedding, Poonam had made a demand for a Fortuner SUV as dowry in place of the Creta car the family had initially agreed to present. To satisfy this demand, Saweety’s father deposited ₹11.59 lakh and obtained a loan to buy the car. Though, Saweety claims Deepak started treating her with abuse soon after the two got married and Poonam mocked her by saying that she had not given enough dowry.

Pressure For Financial Contributions & Forced Career Change

Saweety also accused Deepak of forcing her to collect ₹1 crore for his failed election campaign in 2024 when he contested the Meham assembly seat on a BJP ticket. Apart from this, she alleged that Deepak forced her to give up her boxing career and stay at home to do domestic chores. She also accused Deepak of verbally abusing her when she asked him why he was leaving home every other day, coming back home only after 5-6 days.

Efforts To Salvage The Marriage And Filing Of Divorce

Saweety’s marriage was not to be saved, even with Saweety’s family trying everything to salvage the union. With no other options, Saweety had no option but to file for divorce at the Hisar court on February 11. In the petition, she has asked for ₹50 lakh as alimony and ₹1.5 lakh a month towards her maintenance.

Counter-Complaint By Deepak Niwas Hooda

Deepak has in a counter-complaint lodged with Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya accused Saweety’s family of accepting huge sums of money from him prior to the wedding. Deepak claims that Saweety’s father accepted ₹25 lakh, her brother accepted ₹12 lakh, and her sister accepted ₹9 lakh. Further, Deepak also accused Saweety of accepting ₹17 lakh before the wedding. He also accuses Saweety of stabbing him with a knife when he was asleep, but her family did not take the matter seriously.

Political Career And Financial Disputes

Deepak has also blamed Saweety for threatening to end his political life and falsely involve him in trouble after he had denied her money out of a loan he had acquired for his political campaign. According to him, even though he had funded Saweety’s boxing career, she voluntarily stopped playing after getting the high-ranking Arjuna award.

Hisar SP Shashank Kumar Sawan has confirmed that an investigation is underway in the case.
