Indian Railways: ‘Use Middle Berth for Sleeping Only Between These Hours, OTHERWISE…’ – Read Carefully Before You Travel

Train travel is popular and practical, particularly in nations like India. Sleeper coaches with three-tier berths (upper, middle, and lower) are among the several forms of passenger accommodations offered by Indian Railways. However, Passengers must follow certain regulations, particularly with regard to the middle berth, even if this arrangement maximizes room and provides flexibility.

Middle Berth: Sleeping Hours

The middle berth rule in Indian Railways states that it can only be used for sleeping between 10 PM and 6 AM since it must be folded up during the day to make room for seating. During the day, the middle berth occupant is required to keep their berth folded, and all passengers use the lower bed as a common seating area.

If The Passenger Refuses …

If a passenger in the middle berth refuses to fold it up after 6 a.m., it may cause inconvenience to other passengers. In such instances, passengers can ask the middle berth passenger to fold it. You can report non-compliance to the Ticket Examiner (TTE) or the train employees or the Rail Madad Helpline Number (139) directly.

Middle Berth Rule: Exceptions

Folding down the middle bunk during the day is considered polite because it affects other passengers’ comfort and seating. The rule applies to all passengers in general, but if someone is using the berth, pregnant women, the elderly, or people with medical conditions may be given an exception.

All passengers will have a pleasant trip if they are aware of the middle berth rule and other train etiquette. Following these rules and being mindful of the shared area will improve the overall travel experience as well as foster a more peaceful environment on board.
