Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India is a natural ally of G7 to defend shared values from threats stemming from authoritarianism, terrorism and violent extremism.

Speaking at the G7 summit, the PM underscored vulnerability inherent in open societies and called on tech firms to ensure a safe cyber environment.

India’s participation reflects understanding within G7 that resolution to the biggest global crisis not possible without New Delhi’s involvement, said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

PM Modi also spoke in two sessions on climate change and open societies.

On climate change, the PM called for collective action, recognizing that this challenge can’t be addressed in silos.

He also spoke on the need for open and democratic societies to work together and strengthen each others’ hands to defend the value that they hold dear and to respond to the increasing challenges.

He shared that India is the only G20 country on track to meet its Paris commitments.

“India has been actively engaged with the international community at the level of G20, G7 and World Health Assembly on various aspects related to dealing with a current pandemic,” said MEA.

Calling on the G7 to demonstrate leadership, PM Modi sought their strong support for India and South Africa’s proposal for a TRIPS waiver at WTO.

His call was strongly echoed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Australian PM Scott Morrison and DG of WTO and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

They identified TRIPS waiver as an important element of his global vaccination plan, a roadmap to vaccinate the entire global population by doubling vaccine production.

French President Emmanuel Macron also highlighted the need to focus on ramping up production capacity in Africa and called on India to lend its expertise as an important production hub globally.

During the meet, leaders underlined commitment to free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific and resolved to collaborate with partners in the region and also held detailed discussion on the need for reforming global health governance.
