India Expresses Concern Over Arrest Of Hindu Monk In Bangladesh, Urges Protection Of Minorities

Following the arrest of Bangladeshi Hindu monk Krishna Das Prabhu in Dhaka airport, the external affairs minister raised concern over the issue and attack on Hindus in Bangladesh. “We have noted with deep concern the arrest and denial of bail to Shri Chinmoy Krishna Das, who is also the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote.

This incident follows the multiple attacks on Hindus and other minorities by extremist elements in Bangladesh. There are several documented cases of arson and looting of minorities’ homes and business establishments, as well as theft and vandalism and desecration of deities and temples,” the MEA said in a statement.

The ministry urges Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the safety of Hindus and all minorities. “It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of these incidents remain at large, charges should be pressed against a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings.

We urge Bangladesh authorities to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities, including their right of freedom of peaceful assembly and expression,” the statement said. Krishna Das Prabhu, a Bangladeshi Hindi religious leader, was detained at Dhaka airport on Monday and was prevented from leaving the country.

Hindu rights groups and civil society organizations in Bangladesh staged protests in Dhaka, Chittagong, and other major cities, demanding the release of an ISKCON monk. However, the protests turned violent at several locations. At least 20 people were injured, with three in critical condition, during clashes near Shahbag Square and the university area in Dhaka.

Concern about attack on Hindus
The monk in question, Krishna Das Prabhu (also known as Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari), has reportedly raised concerns about attacks on Hindus and other minorities in the wake of a regime change in Bangladesh earlier this year. Sources say that there were several FIRs and investigations pending against him.

“It is a concerning matter. ISKCON is a peaceful organisation. It spreads love among the people through Lord Krishna and his teachings…Such an organisation and people associated with such an organisation can never be involved in any terrorism…If someone asks for the safety and welfare of their community and people, they cannot be charged with treason…” said Alok Kumar, International President of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on the detention of Krishna Prabhu, as quoted by ANI.

On the detention of ISKCON Bangladesh priest Chinmoy Krishna Das by Dhaka police, International President of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) Alok Kumar says,
