India Applauds Trump-Putin Alaska Summit, Hails Dialogue For Ukraine Peace — Trump Holds Off On Secondary Sanctions (For Now)?

India warmly welcomed the recent Trump-Putin summit in Alaska, marking a significant moment in global diplomacy. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs praised the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing their leadership as “highly commendable” in their efforts to pursue peace and resolve the Ukraine conflict.

“India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable,” the Ministry of External Affairs’ statement said.

“Early End To The Conflict In Ukraine”

New Delhi also highlighted the importance of diplomacy to resolve the Ukraine conflict. “India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,” the statement added.

In a move seen as a relief for India, US President Donald Trump said he is not immediately planning to impose secondary sanctions on Russia or its trading partners. This means countries like India, which have trade ties with Russia, will not face penalties for now. However, Trump also cautioned that he may review the decision in the next two to three weeks, leaving open the possibility of sanctions in the near future.

In an interview with Fox News, Donald Trump softened his stance on Russia following his talks with President Putin over the Ukraine war. He described the Alaska summit as having “gone well” and even rated it a perfect “10 out of 10,” signalling a positive outcome from the meeting.
“I may have to think about it (sanctions) in two or three weeks or something, but we don’t have to think about that immediately,” the US President, who had just days ago adopted an aggressive tone against Russia, said to the media.

The high-profile Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin ended on Friday without any agreement to stop or pause the Ukraine war. The conflict, now in its fourth year, is considered the deadliest in Europe since 1945.

“There were many, many points that we agreed on,” Trump said at a joint press conference with Putin. “I would say a couple of big ones that we haven’t quite got there, but we’ve made some headway. So there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”

“And there are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there. We didn’t get there,” he added.

About Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

“Now, it’s really up to President Zelenskyy to get it done. And I would also say the European nations, they have to get involved a little — but it’s up to President Zelenskyy,” Trump said.
