India faced a crushing 110-run defeat against Sri Lanka in the third ODI on Wednesday, marking their first series loss on Sri Lankan soil in 27 years. Led by Rohit Sharma, India, chasing a target of 249, was all out for 138 on a spin-friendly pitch.

Sri Lanka’s spinners, led by Dunith Wellalage with 5 wickets for 27 runs, dominated the Indian lineup. Only Rohit Sharma (35) and Washington Sundar (30) managed significant scores. The defeat in this match sealed a 2-0 series loss for India, who failed to secure a win in the three-match series.

Rohit Sharma Reflects On ODI Series Defeat

At the post-match presentation, former Indian captain Rohit Sharma played down the loss, stating, ‘I don’t think it is a concern. But it is something we have to look at individually and as a gameplan. There is never going to be complacency. Sri Lanka played better than us, and we need to address the areas where we fell short. A series loss is not the end of the world; it’s about how we bounce back.’

Gautam Gambhir Faces Scrunity After Historic Series Loss To Sri Lanka

India’s defeat has intensified scrutiny of head coach Gautam Gambhir. Despite his illustrious playing career, Gambhir is facing criticism for his coaching performance following this historic series loss.

In earlier matches of the series, Sri Lanka won the second ODI by 32 runs, and the first match ended in a thrilling tie. Sri Lanka posted a challenging total of 248 for 7, with Avishka Fernando scoring 96 and Kusal Mendis 59. Despite a strong debut by Riyan Parag, who took 3 wickets for 54 runs, India struggled to manage Sri Lankan batsmen, culminating in a disappointing series conclusion.
