IND Vs AUS: ‘No Malice, Just Misunderstanding’ In Adelaide, THIS Australian Legend Said On Ricky Ponting On Head-Siraj Spat

Former cricketer Ricky Ponting shared his thoughts on the heated exchange between Australia’s Travis Head and India’s Mohammed Siraj during the Adelaide Test. Speaking on the ICC Review podcast, Ponting emphasized that he didn’t believe there was any malice between the two players.

The Incident and Disciplinary Actions

Mohammed Siraj was fined 20% of his match fee for violating Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to language or actions that could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter. Meanwhile, Travis Head was penalized for breaching Article 2.13, which pertains to the abuse of players, support personnel, or officials during international matches.

Ponting Reflects on the Incident

On the latest episode of The ICC Review, Ponting suggested that the altercation between Head and Siraj was unintentional. He explained, “Looking back at it now, I think it was accidental the way that whole thing played out. I don’t think there was any malice meant at the start.” Ponting further speculated that a misunderstanding might have fueled the exchange, adding, “The misinterpretation of what had actually gone on led to how it ended.”

Rohit Sharma’s Perspective on Fast Bowlers’ Reactions

Ponting also highlighted that India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, would likely expect his fast bowlers to react passionately when under pressure. “Siraj obviously wasn’t happy about being hit over deep backward square for six the ball before. Rohit, I’m sure, would expect these fast bowlers to react like that,” said Ponting. The exchange followed a fiery knock of 140 by Travis Head, who had been recently dismissed by Siraj.

Both Players Receive Demerit Points

As a result of their actions, both Siraj and Head received one demerit point each on their disciplinary records, marking their first offences within the last 24 months. Both players admitted to the violations and accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle.

Reconciliation on the Field

Despite the verbal spat, the two players quickly reconciled when Siraj came out to bat during India’s second innings. The incident occurred when Head was dismissed after scoring a brilliant 140, and Siraj’s gesture towards the dressing room sparked the brief exchange of words.

Australia’s Dominant Response After Perth Loss

Australia bounced back from their massive 295-run defeat in Perth with an emphatic 10-wicket victory in the day-night Test. Head’s scintillating 140 off 141 balls was the standout performance, earning him the Player of the Match award. Australia’s pacers—Mitchell Starc (6/48 and 2/60), Pat Cummins (2/41 and 5/57), and the returning Scott Boland (2/54 and 3/51)—delivered masterful performances in the favorable conditions of Adelaide.

Australia’s Rise in the ICC World Test Championship

Australia’s victory temporarily lifted them to the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings. However, they were soon overtaken by South Africa following their win over Sri Lanka, while India slipped to third place in the standings.
