‘If You Play With Fire, It Will Burn…’: Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Warns Muhammad Yunus, Alleges Erasure Of Freedom Movement’s Legacy

Bangladesh’s Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has warned Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. Sheikh Hasina targeted the interim government of Bangladesh on April 13. She termed Yunus a “Self-centred loan shark” and blamed him for plotting the nation’s downfall with foreign players to quench his power thirst.

Sheikh Hasina virtually addressed supporters

During her eight-minute virtual address to supporters, Sheikh Hasina also raised doubts over student Abu Saeed’s murder after a massive protest broke out across the country and led to her exit from the country.

Yunus erasing the freedom movement history’

Sheikh Hasina fled the country in August 2024 and vowed to return to Bangladesh. She accused Yunus of systematically erasing the freedom movement history, especially the contributions of the Awami League to the country’s Independence.

‘Mukti Joddhas (freedom fighters) are being insulted‘

She said, “All signs of Bangladesh’s freedom movement are being removed. Mukti Joddhas (freedom fighters) are being insulted. We had built Mukti Joddha (freedom fighters) Complexes in all districts to keep their memories alive, but those are being burnt down. Will Dr Yunus be able to justify this?”

“If you play with fire, it will burn you too,” she added.

‘Government had no plans to ban the Awami League’

In March, Bangladesh’s Interim Government had no plans to ban the Awami League, but individuals within its leadership accused of crimes, including murder and crimes against humanity, will face trial in the country’s courts, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing had said in a statement.

Govt has set two possible timelines for the elections

Speaking with a delegation from the International Crisis Group, led by Comfort Ero, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus confirmed that the government has set two possible timelines for the elections. According to the statement, he assured the group that the dates would not change.

Govt has not ruled out referring Awami League leaders to the ICC

Professor Yunus also stated that the government has not ruled out referring Awami League leaders to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. This follows a UN fact-finding mission report on potential crimes committed during the July uprising. “It is very much on the table,” he said, underlining the Interim Government’s stance on accountability.
