I won’t be retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad, looking forward to a fresh start: David Warner

David Warner had a season to forget in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain was sacked from his post and dropped from the playing XI during the India leg of the season. Back in the final XI in the UAE leg, Warner was again benched after he only managed 2 runs in as many matches.

The left-handed batsman time and again hinted at parting ways with SRH after being dropped again and even revealed that he won’t be travelling to the stadium. Even though Warner travelled to the stadium, he was seen sitting in the stands instead of the dugout.

Ending the speculations regarding his association with SRH, Warner has now confirmed that the franchise won’t be retaining him and that he is looking forward to a fresh start from the next season.

Speaking on 1170 SEN Breakfast with Vossy, Warner said: “I will put my name in the auction. “By the signs of the recent IPL, I won’t be retained by the Sunrisers, so I’m looking forward to a fresh start.”

Warner was sacked and dropped during the India leg after he only managed 193 runs in 6 matches. SRH only managed 1 win in India. He was replaced by Kane Williamson, who led SRH to 2 wins 7 matches.

The most consistent opener in the history of IPL, Warner finishes his SRH career with most runs for them – he scored 4014 runs at 49.55. His tally includes 40 half-centuries and 2 centuries.

Warner also captained SRH to their only title win in 2016. The Orange Army won  35 out of 69 matches under him.

Despite his below-par run in IPL 2021, Warner is expected to be in high demand during the IPL 2022 mega-auction and a strong contender to lead a franchise as well. He is a former all-format vice-captain of Australia and has led Kangaroos in white-ball cricket.
