‘I have not been as lucky as my contemporaries like Vikrant Massey’: Sahil Vaid on his roles in films

Bollywood actor Sahil Vaid was recently seen essaying the role of Amit “Sunny” Sud, in Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani-starrer Shershaah. For the unversed, the film is a retelling of the life journey of the Late Captain Vikram Batra, who laid down his life in the 1999 Kargil War. While Sidharth essayed the role of Captain Batra, Sahil played Sunny, Batra’s real-life best friend in the film.

And that is sort of the roles, Sahil is predominantly known for in, Bollywood, save the 2017 Bank Chor, where he played Jugnu, an outright negative character, with elan. From Poplu in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania to Somdev in Badrinath Ki Dulhania or even Jagdish in Dil Bechara, and now Sunny in Shershaah, Sahil has, it seems, carved himself a niche in playing the friend to the lead character in Indian cinema.

The actor, however, begs to differ. “I do not think I have been typecast, I have a lot more to give. It is a question for the producers and directors of our industry if they want to experiment with me,” he opines, adding, “I am tired of playing the same kinds of roles.”

However, Sahil is quick to quip that even if he seemingly plays the same kind of roles, they are all different characters. The actor adds, “Even if it is the hero ka dost again I make it a point that the guy is different.”

Reiterating that he is not satisfied with the characters he is playing right now, Sahil says he definitely wants to be experimented with.

“But I do not have any other way to keep myself in the movies. If I keep saying no to everything that comes to me people will probably forget me and won’t even remember there was an actor called Sahil Vaid. And then years will go by and I wouldn’t have anything to do with movies,” he opines.

“I am kind of scared of that and so I keep going back to the movies, try doing small roles but different kinds of roles,” he says.

Sahil however, adds that perhaps fortune has favoured other actors who came into the same time as he did, more. “I have not been as lucky as my contemporaries like say Vikrant Massey, and even Abhishek Banerjee. They have got good opportunities,” he says.

“Even Divyendu Sharma was experimented with in Mirzapur and he did a fabulous job. I think I have it in me. I am just kind of waiting for somebody to just see that I am more of a wholesome actor than just a comedic relief,” Sahil says.

The actor, who is trained in martial arts and dance, goes on to add that he never thought he would start with comedy, neither did he ever think he could do comedy. Stating that his jokes never work in front of his friends, he adds that when he does it in movies, it seems that people just go crazy.

“I am happy with what I am doing, but I am definitely not satisfied and am hungry for more. The filmmakers who decide which actor they should hire will play what role need to decide, why not Sahil Vaid,” he signs off.
