In the era of digital transactions, where fraudsters are always looking for ways to dupe people, one needs to be vigilant while making online payments. Scanning QR codes is one of the easiest ways to transfer money. It is used everywhere, from shops to vegetable vendors, making transactions simple and seamless. QR codes have made it easier for people to carry out smooth transactions.

Online payments can be made using any UPI payment app like PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm. These apps have options for QR scanning. However, one needs to be careful while making payments, as scanning a wrong or fake QR code can result in a loss of money. Recently, there have been several reports of scams using fake QR codes.

How To Identify Real Vs Fake QR Codes?

In this case, it becomes important to know how to identify fake QR codes. Although all QR codes may look similar, there are some small details that people can overlook, which can help prevent scams.

The payment receiver should use a sound box to receive payments via the QR code. This will help detect if a payment is made on a fake QR code in time.

While making payment via a QR code, read carefully the details it provides you with.

You should verify the name of owner/ shop before making payment by asking them.

Always check the source of the QR code before scanning.

Do not scan QR codes received via SMS or e-mail, as they might contain software to steal your data.

If you find the QR code scanner suspicious, you should scan the QR code using Google Lens. This will help you identify where the URL is being redirected.

Avoid using QR code for receiving payment.

Inspect the QR code before scanning. Look for any signs of tampering, especially around the edges.
