Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, inaugurated the ‘Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport’ worth Rs 8,900 crore. The inauguration marked the first phase of the country’s first international deepwater transhipment project in Kerala.

It is the country’s first dedicated container transhipment port, and represents the transformative advancements being made in India’s maritime sector as part of the Viksit Bharat vision.

This deep-water port has been developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), Adani Group company and India’s largest port developer, under the public-private partnership model.

The stage was jointly shared by PM Modi, Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, and Adani Group Chairman, Gautam Adani.

On the inauguration, Gautam Adani, wrote on X, “Today, at Vizhinjam, history, destiny and possibility came together as a 30-year-old dream of Kerala became India’s gateway to the world.” He further wrote, “We are proud to have built India’s first deep-sea automated port. A future global transshipment hub. This is a triumph of vision, resilience and partnership.”

Gautam Adani also thanked PM Modi and Kerala CM, Vijayan. He said, “Grateful to PM @narendramodi & CM @pinarayivijayan for their support. Together, we sail toward a stronger, bolder India. Jai Hind.”

Vizhinjam Seaport To Transform India’s Maritime Sector

The Vizhinjam International Transhipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport is an ambitious project taken up by the Government of Kerala. The port is currently being developed in a landlord model with a Public Private Partnership component on a design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis. The private partner, the Concessionaire Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited had commenced the construction on December 5, 2015. Vizhinjam’s strategic location near international shipping routes significantly reduces transit times for vessels, making it a key point for maritime trade.
