With two militant outfits namely Tiwa Liberation Army (TLA) and United Gurkha People’s Organisation (UGPO) formally surrendering and laying down arms, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the era of tribal militancy is finally over in the state.
Sarma announced that with the surrender of TLA and UGPMO militants, each and every tribal group has joined the mainstream as these were the last troops in the jungle.
The TLA and UGPO who decided to shun violence and join the mainstream formally surrendered and laid down arms before CM Himanta Biswa Sarma at a ceremonial function held at International Auditorium Srimanta Sankardev Kalashetra in Guwahati.
A total of 246 militants of United Gorkha People’s Organisation, Tiwa Liberation Army formally surrendered before CM Sarma.
The Assam Police said that 277 various types of arms, grenades and 720 rounds of ammunition were deposited by both organisations before the authority.
A financial grant of Rs 1.5 lakh each was distributed to the former members of RNLF, UPRF, NLFB, NSLA and ADF for their rehabilitation, the Assam Police informed.
On the Occasion of Republic Day, Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi on Wednesday informed that four Karbi militant outfits had agreed to leave the path of violence and signed memorandum of settlement with the Central and state governments in September 2021.
He further informed that several extremists belonging to five groups have surrendered to the government.
While delivering his Republic Day speech, the Assam Governor said that 14 hardcore militants were gunned down in separate encounters by the security forces in 2021.
“Two newly formed Bodo militant groups were also neutralised as all the cadres of these groups surrendered before the authorities,” the Assam governor said.
