Self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and five other accused have been convicted in the Ranjit Singh murder case. Ranjit Singh, who was murdered on July 10, 2002, was a former supporter of Singh’s Dera Sacha Sauda.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court in Panchkula has convicted Singh and five co-accused under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Reportedly, the sentence will be pronounced on October 12.

Convicted for rape, murder in past

Currently, the controversial godman is serving a 20-year jail term for raping two of his women followers. He was convicted for the rape by a special CBI court in August 2017.

Ranjit Singh was shot dead by four persons on July 10, 2002, in the Khanpur Kolian village in Kurukshetra, after he went against the Dera Chief.

In January 2019, a court sentenced the self-styled godman and three others to life imprisonment for the murder of a journalist that took place over 16 years.

Earlier this year, ’emergency parole’ was granted to the Dera chief to enable him to attend to his ailing mother. To seek parole, Singh had submitted medical documents to prison authorities and was taken to Gurugram to meet his mother.
