After Google Maps gained significant attention for the recent update to its Maps platform, now Apple Maps has emerged in the spotlight. On February 10, 2025, Google Maps made waves by changing the Gulf of Mexico’s name to the Gulf of America for the people using the app in America. Explaining the move, Google remarked users in the United States will now see the label ‘Gulf of America, while users in Mexico will continue to see the familiar ‘Gulf of Mexico’.

The development follows President Donald Trump’s executive order for the same on February 9, 2025. Seems like there’s an ongoing technical disagreement on the displayed name of a major water body across different maps: Google Maps, Bing Maps, and Apple Maps. The renaming of the iconic water body has left the netizens divided, thus welcoming different reactions from X users. In a post on X on Wednesday morning, Apple Hubs shared an image sticking to the name ‘Gulf of Mexico’, with the caption, “Apple Maps vs Google Maps (US)”
