Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated India’s first smog tower at Delhi’s Connaught Place on Monday. The tower will purify 1,000 cubic metres of air per second within a radius of around 1 km.
The smog tower is installed as a pilot project in Delhi. To clean the polluted air, the smog tower uses Adaptive Clean Air System (ACAN).
Kejriwal said the tower has been set up as a pilot project. He said the initial trends will be available within a month. According to Delhi CM, if the pilot project is successful, more smog towers will be installed in the national capital.
According to officials, a two-year analysis will be carried to ascertain the effectiveness of the smog tower after it becomes operational.
A control room has also been set up at the spot to monitor the operations of the smog tower. The smog tower, which is 20-metre tall, aims to combat rising air pollution in Delhi.
The air filters that will be deployed in the tower have been developed by a team of experts at the University of Minnesota in the United States. The construction of another smog tower is underway at Anand Vihar
The tower has been built by Tata Projects Limited in technical collaboration with IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi. Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has been appointed as the nodal agency for Connaught Place smog tower.
