From US tariff cuts to cricket: How Bangladesh’s fortunes changed in 4 days with 3 key deals

In a remarkable week for Bangladesh, the country has secured three significant deals, two on the international front and one on the cricket field. These moves not only strengthen its global economic position but also provide relief in the sporting arena.

From trade agreements to easing international tariffs and cricket governing body decisions, Bangladesh is making headlines for all the right reasons. Here’s a closer look at the developments.

US Reduces Tariffs on Bangladeshi Exports

Monday marked a landmark moment for Bangladesh’s economy as the United States agreed to cut tariffs on Bangladeshi goods. The move comes as part of Washington’s efforts to support one of the world’s largest garment-producing nations.

According to an official White House statement, President Donald Trump’s administration will reduce the reciprocal US tariff on Bangladeshi products from 20% to 19%. This is the latest in a series of tariff adjustments: Trump initially imposed a 37% tariff on Bangladeshi goods last year, which was later lowered to 20% in August. This new reduction provides further relief for exporters, particularly in the textile and garment sector, which accounts for nearly 80% of Bangladesh’s total exports.

Data from Bangladesh Bank and the National Board of Revenue highlights the scale of trade with the US: in 2024, Bangladesh exported around $8.4 billion worth of goods to the US, while importing goods worth $2.2 billion.

ICC Grants Bangladesh a Cricketing Reprieve

Bangladesh also received major relief in international cricket. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided not to penalize the country for opting out of the T20 World Cup 2026 matches in India due to security concerns.

Initially, there were concerns that this decision could attract heavy sanctions. Instead, the ICC took a more supportive stance, allowing Bangladesh to maintain its standing in international cricket. In a further boost, the ICC announced that Bangladesh will host at least one ICC event between 2028 and 2031, giving the nation a prestigious opportunity to showcase its cricketing infrastructure on a global stage.

For the Bangladesh Cricket Board, this decision is a significant relief and a recognition of the country’s commitment to safety without compromising its role in international cricket.

Strategic Economic Partnership with Japan

Adding to its economic victories, Bangladesh signed an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPP) with Japan on Friday. This agreement promises not only duty-free market access but also opens doors for long-term collaboration in investment, technology, services, and supply chain management.

The journey to this agreement began in 2022, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and Japan, and involved a joint study team from both nations. The four-year-long negotiation process now culminates in a partnership that positions Bangladesh as a key player in Asia’s growing economic landscape.

A Week of Wins for Bangladesh

In just one week, Bangladesh has strengthened trade ties with the US, expanded strategic cooperation with Japan, and secured a major reprieve in international cricket. These developments not only bolster the nation’s economic and sporting profile but also highlight Bangladesh’s growing influence on the global stage.
