Former J&K Governor Satyapal Malik passed away at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after a prolonged illness on Tuesday. Malik’s PS KS Rana confirmed the news of Malik.

The hospital administration said the former governor passed away at 1:10 pm on Tuesday.

Malik served as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019, during which Article 370 was repealed on August 5, 2019, and the state’s special status was revoked. Today is the sixth anniversary of this historic decision.

His tenure as governor extended to Goa and then to Meghalaya till October 2022. His political journey began as a socialist leader in the 1970s. In 1974, he became an MLA from Baghpat on behalf of the Bharatiya Kranti Dal. He then served as the general secretary of the Lok Dal and represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1989.

In his long political career, Malik was associated with several parties, including Charan Singh’s Bharatiya Kranti Dal, Congress and V.P. Singh-led Janata Dal. Finally, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2004.

In May, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed a chargesheet against Satyapal Malik in connection with the Kiru Hydro Electric Project of Jammu and Kashmir.

The chargesheet was filed against Satyapal Malik, his two private secretaries and four others.

The case relates to alleged corruption in awarding a contract for the civil work for the Kiru Hydro Electric Power Project (HEP) worth Rs 2,200 crore in Kishtwar in 2019.
