India’s women’s hockey team suffered a 0-2 defeat against reigning Olympic champions Netherlands in their Hockey World Cup phase two match in Amstelveen on Friday. Yibbi Jansen and Frederique Matla scored from penalty corners as the Dutch maintained their dominance.

The defeat leaves India with one point in the group, while Netherlands strengthened their position in the race for the semi-finals. India will now face Australia in their final phase two match on Sunday, August 23, in a must-win encounter

Jansen gives Netherlands early lead

Netherlands started aggressively and earned their first penalty corner in the second minute. Jansen made no mistake with her drag-flick to put the hosts 1-0 ahead. India goalkeeper Bichu Devi then produced an important save to deny Jansen from another penalty corner. The Dutch continued to dominate possession and create circle entries, but India’s defence managed to prevent them from extending their lead.

India gradually improved in the second quarter and earned two penalty corners. However, Deepika’s attempts were kept out by the Netherlands defence.

Savita, who came on during the second quarter, was also called into action and made crucial saves to keep India within touching distance. The Netherlands continued to control much of the game, but India went into half-time trailing by just one goal.

Matla doubles Netherlands’ lead

India showed more intent after the restart and briefly threatened on the counter. Sunelita Toppo came close, but her effort was blocked. Netherlands eventually found their second goal in the 38th minute. Another penalty corner presented the opportunity, and Matla converted to make it 2-0.

India continued to search for a way back into the contest but struggled to maintain possession against the Dutch press. Navneet Kaur had an opportunity to reduce the deficit, but her effort was denied by goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal. Netherlands held on to their two-goal advantage until the final whistle to complete a 2-0 victory.

India face Australia in do-or-die match

With their semi-final hopes still alive, India now face a crucial clash against Australia on Sunday, August 23. The result will be vital for India’s chances of progressing further in the tournament.

Australia drew 1-1 with China earlier on Friday, leaving India with a must-win scenario in their final phase two game.
