Fight over Mukul Roy intensifies: BJP objects to PAC nomination, says he’s still BJP MLA; Mamata speaks up

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has objected to the nomination of Mukul Roy to the Public Accounts Committee of West Bengal Legislature, saying he is still an MLA of the party as he won the elections on the BJP ticket and so his nomination is not maintainable. The saffron party has officially raised a complaint with the Assembly Speaker.

Mukul Roy has been nominated by the members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) but the BJP said how can that hold merit and has raised an official objection.

Now, TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that Roy has the support of the TMC and the people’s mandate. She added if there is a voting on the PAC chairmanship, then by the virtue of TMC’s strength in the House, Roy would be selected.

On Friday,  BJP leader and Leader of Opposition (LOP) in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari had given a petition to the Assembly Speaker for disqualification of Roy. Adhikari had demanded Roy’s resignation citing anti-defection law.

“Todna-Jodna is part of TMC’s dirty politics. They have been doing this for the past 10 years and nobody opposed it. But it is being opposed now and action will be taken under the anti-defection law,” Adhikari had said on approaching Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar against Roy.

Roy, who had joined the BJP after leaving the TMC, returned to Mamata Banerjee’s party earlier this month. He had won from the 83-Krishnanagar Uttar Assembly constituency. Along with him, his son Subhranshu Roy also rejoined the ruling party in West Bengal.

“I have joined TMC today. In the present circumstances, no one will stay in BJP,” Roy had said after joining the party. “It feels good to see all known faces again, having come out of the BJP,” he added.
