FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers, Brazil vs Uruguay: Federico Valverde’s Effort Goes in Vain As Gerson Helps Hosts Settle for 1-1 Draw

Brazil drew 1-1 against Uruguay in the South American FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers on Tuesday night at the Arena Fonte Nova in Brazil’s Salvador. With the draw, the hosts sustained their unbeaten record at home against Uruguay in World Cup qualifiers.

The visitors drew first blood in the 55th minute when Federico Valverde fired a right-footed low shot which got the better of the Brazilian goalkeeper and found the back of the net.

Just seven minutes later, Brazil scored the equaliser when midfielder Gerson took advantage of the Uruguay defender’s header in the box to fire a powerful low shot into the goal. The equaliser brought the yellow jersey Brazilian fans on their feet.

In the match, Brazil were the better team in terms of possession, number of passes and pass accuracy. The hosts secured four corners but couldn’t covert any of it to their advantage. During the first-half stoppage time, the hosts had come tantalisingly close to secure the lead but Igor Jesus’s brilliant header into the goal was stopped.

Brazilian fans must have missed their star striker-Neymar who didn’t feature in the match. However, the star-studded lineup did include the likes of Vinicius Jr, Igor Jesus and Danilo – Bruno Gumiares.

With the draw, Brazil are currently at the fifth spot with a total of 18 points in the standings of the South American FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers . In 12 matches, Brazil have won five, lost four and drawn three. On the other hand, Uruguay are placed second with 20 points. In 12 matches, they have won five, lost two and drawn five.
