Executions, amputations of hand and leg to return under new Taliban regime: Mullah Nooruddin Turabi

A top Taliban leader has said that strict punishment, including executions and amputations of hands and legs may again be carried out in Afghanistan. Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, who is one of the Taliban founders, slammed the critics who denounced the Taliban’s executions in the past.

Speaking exclusively to Associated Press, Turabi warned the international community against interfering with the new rules being imposed by the Taliban leaders in Afghanistan.

“Everyone criticised us for the punishments in the stadium, but we have never said anything about their laws and their punishments,” Turabi told the news agency.

Turabi justified the executions and harsher punishments, saying “Taliban will follow Islam and we will make our laws on the Quran”. He said when Taliban leaders don’t interfere in other country’s laws, similarly “No one will tell us what our laws should be.”

During the previous Taliban regime, executions and amputations of hands and legs were carried out in public. However, during the incumbent regime, the inhuman punishments might not be carried out in fron of the public.

The people convicted in murder cases were usually killed by a single shot to the head. A hand of convicted thieves were chopped off. Persons convicted of highway robbery, a hand and a foot were amputated, AP reported.

“Cutting off of hands is very necessary for security,” Turabi said.

Turabi said that the Taliban cabinet was contemplating whether to carry out punishments in public and will soon develop a policy.

Turabi said the new Taliban regime would allow television, mobile phones, photos and video “because this is the necessity of the people, and we are serious about it”.

It may be noted that after capturing Kabul on August 15, the Taliban promised the world that women’s rights, media freedom, and amnesty for government officials will be taken care of in Afghanistan
