For those who were unable to access their PF passbooks, there is good news. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has restored its Passbook Portal after nearly two weeks of maintenance. This will allow millions of subscribers to once again access their PF account statements online. The portal had remained unavailable since the last week of June due to a major system upgrade. Along with restoring the passbook service, EPFO has also made a significant change to the UAN activation process. Employees can no longer activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) through the EPFO website, as the process has now shifted entirely to the UMANG app using Aadhaar based Face Authentication Technology (FAT).
Why EPFO Passbook Portal wasn’t available?
After remaining inaccessible for almost two weeks due to system maintenance and technology upgrades, the EPFO Passbook Portal is now live again. Subscribers can log in to view their PF passbook, account statement and contribution details. The restoration comes at an important time as EPFO is expected to begin crediting 8.25% annual interest for FY 2025-26 from July 15. With the portal operational again, members can monitor whether the interest amount has been credited to their accounts.
What are new changes introduced?
Users logging into the portal will notice a message stating that transaction details and balances for recent financial years are available immediately. However, records from older financial years are still being migrated to the upgraded system. EPFO has clarified that this is an ongoing automated process and members do not need to take any action. Historical data will gradually become available over the next few days.
What has changed in UAN activation?
One of the biggest changes introduced with the upgraded portal is the discontinuation of web based UAN activation. Earlier, employees could activate their Universal Account Number through the EPFO Unified Member Portal. That option has now been permanently removed. Users visiting the portal are now informed that UAN activation through the website is no longer supported.
UAN activation moves to UMANG App
EPFO has shifted the entire UAN activation process to the government backed UMANG app. Employees who need to activate their UAN must now download the app and complete the process using Aadhaar based Face Authentication Technology. According to EPFO, this change is part of its larger technology upgrade aimed at strengthening account security, improving system reliability and offering a more secure digital experience for millions of PF subscribers.
How to activate UAN on UMANG App?
Subscribers can activate their UAN through the UMANG app by logging in. They need to select the EPFO Services section and choose the UAN Activation option. They then need to verify their Aadhaar linked mobile number using an OTP. Once activated, they can access various EPFO services through the app. To check their PF balance, users need to open the UMANG app and go to EPFO Services. Then they need to select View Passbook and log in using their UAN and OTP. The passbook displays the latest PF balance along with employee and employer contributions. This allows subscribers to track their EPF savings anytime without visiting an EPFO office.
