ENG Vs IND: Gautam Gambhir Responds To Sunil Gavaskar’s Criticism, Prioritises Jasprit Bumrah’s Longevity

Gautam Gambhir focused on the approach of the management and explained the necessity of rest to Jasprit Bumrah even though Sunil Gavaskar urged to make him play all the games. Even Bumrah, who faced the question, maintained a wary silence when asked about Gavaskar demand at the end of the match. His matchless last innings (as the English followed on to get 371) indicates the loss in strength when he is not bagging wickets of the main players. In response to the criticism leveled against the inexperienced attack, Gambhir included the fact that they had no previous exposure to Test cricket as preceding Indian pace batteries had.

Gautam Gambhir’s Statement

“I think for us to manage Bumrah’s workload is more important because there’s a lot of cricket going forward and we know that what he brings to the table as well. So before he came on this tour, it was already decided that he’s going to play three Test matches, but let’s see how his body turns up. But we haven’t decided which two other Test matches he’s going to play,” Gambhir said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

“We will have to give them time… If we start judging our bowlers after every Test, how will we develop a bowling attack? Outside Bumrah and (Mohammad) Siraj, we don’t have that much experience, but they have quality, which is why they are in this dressing room. But we have got to keep backing them because it’s not about one tour. It’s about building a fast-bowler battery that can serve India for long time in Test cricket,” Gambhir concluded.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Performance In The 1st Test Of The ENG Vs IND

Jasprit Bumrah gave his all on day 2 of the 1st Test match between India and England at Headingley. The standout Indian bowler was the pace spearhead in the first innings, and he took a five-wicket haul (5/83) to enforce England to 465 runs that are only six runs short of the Indians score. His skills in dissolving key alliances as well as in creating the vibrations even on a still surface kept India afloat in a stressful encounter. The rest of bowling attack failed to take advantage of this and they were unable to dismiss England as they did chase 371, despite his best spells to take some tight spells in the final day. The constant determination reflected in the performance of Bumrah made him a bowling leader of India.
