ENG Vs IND 4th Test: What’s The Secret Behind Anshul Kamboj’s 318? Why ‘AK-47’ Will Never Forget This Number

Anshul Kamboj’s years of hard work and perseverance have finally been rewarded. The young pacer played his long-awaited Test debut for India in the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester. Joining the list of 318 players representing India in Test cricket, Anshul was handed his debut cap by former cricketer Deep Dasgupta – a moment he will remember for the rest of his life.

What makes this first-class debut even more remarkable is the background to it. Not initially part of the touring team, Anshul was brought in as a replacement after Arshdeep Singh injured his hand. When Nitish Reddy also got injured, the door was opened, and Anshul seized it with both hands. Now, put in the limelight in a do-or-die game with India down 1-2 in the five-match series, the Karnal boy will seek to leave an imprint and assist the team in levelling the series.

Why Teammates Call Him ‘AK47’

At home, Anshul Kamboj is affectionately known as ‘AK47’ — a reference to his initials and jersey number (47). But there is more to the nickname than meets the eye. As famous for his aggressive pace and bullet-like spells, the name accurately reflects his approach to bowling.

A Historic Connection to Manchester

There’s a weird bit of trivia that goes with Anshul’s debut. The previous Indian to debut in a Test match at Old Trafford was no other than Anil Kumble, 35 years ago in 1990. To make things more coincidental, both Kumble and Kamboj have a rare distinction in domestic cricket: they both took all 10 wickets in an innings of a first-class match.

Impressive Domestic Record

Anshul has consistently established himself in home cricket. In 41 first-class matches, he has taken 79 wickets at 22.88. His performance in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy was outstanding, taking 34 wickets from just six matches at an amazing average of 13.79. He even achieved the uncommon feat of taking 10 wickets in a match against Kerala – a feat that raised eyebrows in the world of cricket.

Glenn McGrath Is His Bowling Idol

Where inspiration is concerned, Anshul Kamboj takes cues from Glenn McGrath, the great Australian fast bowler. Admired for his consistency and relentless accuracy, McGrath’s influence is seen in Kamboj’s game. “I see his bowling videos regularly and try to concentrate on hitting the right line and length,” Anshul once stated in an interview.

From standing on the periphery of choice to winning his Test cap in the deciding game of an important series, Anshul’s odyssey is one of perseverance and dedication. When India battles to remain alive in the series, the eyes will be on ‘AK47’ to determine if he can deliver on debut.
