Who is Annamalai?
Annamalai is not a career politician and worked in the Indian Police Service (IPS) for nine years in various positions in Karnataka before resigning from the service in 2019, citing personal reasons. After leaving the IPS, he joined the BJP in 2020 and quickly rose to become one of the party’s most visible and prominent faces in Tamil Nadu.
As Tamil Nadu BJP president from 2021 to 2025, Annamalai led several campaigns across the state. He also built a strong support base among young voters and gained a large following on social media.
His removal as Tamil Nadu BJP president earlier this year surprised many supporters. Questions about his future grew after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Despite being one of the BJP’s most well-known leaders in the state, he did not contest the polls.
