The employment across nine sectors of the economy stood at 3.10 crore in the July-September 2021 quarter, increasing by 2 lakh from the July-September 2021 quarter, according to labour ministry data released Monday.

As per Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) report released by minister Bhupender Yadav, the total employment in 9 sectors in April-June 2021 was 3.08 crore.

A rise in new employment shows an improvement in economic activity after states lifted the Covid-19 restrictions which were placed to curb the spread of virus during the second wave of the pandemic.

The nine sectors which saw an increase in employment during the period include manufacturing, construction, trade, transport, education, heath, accommodation, restaurant, IT/BPO and Financial services, accounting for a majority of total employment in the non-farm sector industries.

The first report in the series was released by the labour ministry for April-June 2021 quarter. The study covers establishments with 10 or more workers.

Releasing the report, Yadav stated that these studies will aid the government to achieve its mission of last-mile delivery and evidence-based policymaking for workers. He expressed hope that India will soon be able to come out of the third wave of the pandemic.

According to NSO, unemployment across all ages rose to 9.4% during the January-March 2021 quarter in urban areas, up from 9.1% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The unemployment or joblessness rate is defined as the proportion of unemployed persons in the total labour force. The labour force (as per CWS) refers to the number of persons either employed or unemployed on an average in a week of 7 days preceding the date of the survey.
