Duleep Trophy 2024: Axar Patel Rescues India D With His Gritty 86

Axar Patel once again lived up to his reputation on Day 1 of India’s domestic season. Playing for Shreyas Iyer’s India D team at the Anantapur Stadium in Andhra Pradesh on September 5, 2024, Patel delivered a remarkable performance. Despite falling short of his second first-class century, being dismissed for 86 by a brilliant catch from Hritik Shokeen, Patel’s innings was a standout.

Entering the fray on the last ball of the 11th over with India D struggling at 34/5, Patel’s innings was crucial. His last first-class hundred was back in 2016 against Baroda, where he remained unbeaten at 110*. Starting cautiously, Patel managed only three runs from his first 25 balls. However, he soon accelerated with a boundary off Anshul Kamboj and continued his aggressive play after Sarash Jain’s dismissal.

In the second session post-lunch, Patel’s aggressive approach took center stage. He was joined by Arshdeep Singh following the dismissal of Harshit Rana, with the score at a precarious 76/8. Patel, accustomed to high-pressure situations, channeled his inner rescue-man, reminiscent of his crucial 47-run knock in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa.

Patel’s standout moment came in the 39th over, where he dominated Manav Suthar from India C. The over began with a six and was followed by two fours, with Patel reaching his fifty in style with another six, bringing up his half-century in just 77 balls. Supported by Arshdeep, who also upped his game with a six, Patel’s aggressive play led to an 84-run partnership.

Patel continued to score freely, showcasing his ability to turn games around. However, as he sought quick runs, he miscued a shot and was dismissed for 86. India D concluded their first innings at 164 runs.
