Drone strike at UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in UAE

A drone strike causes fire outside the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday. The Abu Dhabi Media Office announced that a fire broke out in an external electrical generator located outside the perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Al Dhafra, reported AP.

According to the statement by the Abu Dhabi Media Office, there were no injuries and no impact on the plant’s radiological safety levels.

“The competent authorities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi responded to a fire that broke out in an electric generator located outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region, caused by a drone strike, with no injuries recorded, no impact on radiation safety levels, and all precautionary measures having been taken. Updates will be provided as they become available. The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation confirmed that the fire did not affect the safety of the plant or the readiness of its core systems, and that all stations are operating as usual. The competent authorities urge the public to refrain from spreading rumors and to obtain information solely from official sources,” the statement read.

The incident follows a drone strike amid a fragile ceasefire between the United States of America and Iran. While the truce has held so far, tensions persist, raising fears of a return to open warfare in West Asia and a further prolongation of the global energy crisis triggered by the conflict.

Earlier a similar drone-related incident affected UAE energy infrastructure, a fire incident was reported at facilities in Fujairah’s petroleum zone and Abu Dhabi’s Ruwais industrial complex and gas plants.

Meanwhile US President Donald Trump made a cryptic post on his Truth Social account. The post which read, “it was a calm before the storm,” alongside an AI-generated image of himself on a US Navy vessel in rough seas with warships and apparent Iranian-flagged ships in the background, intensified concerns over potential renewed escalation with Iran.

The US-Israel-Iran war which began in late February, stands paused after US-brokered ceasefire, in effect since April 8, 2026, continues to hold tenuously but faces significant strain from sporadic drone and missile incidents. Though Pakistan-mediated talks have made limited progress, with both sides exchanging proposals but failing to bridge deep divisions.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly described the US-Iran ceasefire as extremely fragile, most notably calling it “on massive life support.”

With global oil supply chain under constrians, incidents like this risk unraveling it, potentially reigniting broader conflict and prolonging global energy market strains.
