‘Downswing of second wave’: India’s COVID-19 recovery rate increases to 90%, says Union Health Ministry

 In a positive development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Thursday informed that the country’s COVID-19 recovery rate has increased from 85.6 per cent to 90 per cent with more people getting cured of the illness.

“Overall recoveries are now exceeding the number of cases being reported on a daily basis. The recovery rate has increased from 85.6% to 90% now, it’s a positive indication,” said Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry, during the daily briefing.

He further stated that as many as 24 states have reported a decline in active cases since last week. At, 22,17,320, the highest single-day COVID tests were conducted in the country on May 26.

‘India on downswing of second COVID wave’

Meanwhile, Niti Aayog member Dr VK Paul has informed that the country is on the downswing of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. “It’s reassuring that we are on the downswing of the second wave, and it will be sustained if restrictions open up systematically as the time comes,” he said.

While reacting to the incident of the wrong second COVID-19 vaccine dose given in Uttar Pradesh, Dr Paul said, “Our protocol is clear that both doses given should be of the same vaccine. This matter should be investigated. Even if this has happened it should not be a cause of concern.”

COVID cases in India

With as many as 2,11,298 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the overall infections in the country mounted to 2,73,69,093, the health minister said earlier today.

The death toll due to the disease rose to 3,15,235 with 3,847 fresh fatalities being reported in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed. Also, 21,57,857 COVID-19 tests were conducted on Wednesday, taking the total number of such exams done so far in the country to 33,69,69,353.
