There are thousands of expressways all around the country, but have you ever wondered which one was the first expressway and when and where it was made? According to reports, the expressway was the Mumbai-Pune Expressway that cut short a travel time between two cities. This was the six-lane expressway that revolutionised road connectivity across all states.

According to a Forbes India report, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, also known as the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway, begins at Kalamboli and has five interchanges: Kon, Chowk, Khalapur, Kusgaon, and Talegaon. It is composed of two carriageways, each having three concrete lanes separated by a divider. To guarantee safety and smooth traffic flow, the entry of two-wheelers, three-wheelers, bullock carts, and tractors is strictly forbidden.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway runs from Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai to Kiwale in Pune, traversing the Sahyadri mountain range via tunnels and beautiful passes. According to the Magic Bricks study, it has five interchanges: Kon, Chowk, Khalapur, Kusgaon, and Talegaon. The road has cut travel time between the two cities by about two hours.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is one of India’s busiest roads, and it was the first to include six lanes, access-controlled tolls at four plazas, and set speed restrictions. It offers a smooth travel experience, cutting over the entire Sahyadri range via tunnels and passes, with stunning scenery along the route. The highway was designed for efficiency, with two carriageways, each with three lanes to ensure seamless traffic movement.
