Delhi to Dharamshala in 6 hours by September 2026: NH-503 four-laning, new mountain tunnels, Kangra bypass, full route through Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
NHAI is targeting September 2026 for completing the four-laning of the Delhi-Dharamshala corridor on NH-503. The upgrade will cut travel time from the current 10 to 12 hours to just 6 hours, benefiting travellers from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh on one of India’s most popular mountain routes.
The route takes advantage of the operational Ambala-Kotputli Expressway and the Kiratpur-Nerchowk section, both already complete. These stretches allow vehicles to maintain highway speeds without hitting urban traffic, cutting a significant chunk of time before the mountain section even begins.
New tunnels are being built through the lower Himalayan ranges on the route, replacing the dangerous curves that currently slow traffic and cause accidents, especially during monsoon. Two tunnels near Tarsuh village and a new Riund Bridge on the Dharamshala-Dehra alignment are among the key structures being added.
Dedicated bypass roads are being built around major traffic-heavy towns along the route. The Bhangwar-Kangra Bypass on NH-303/503 is already complete as a four-lane corridor. Long-distance tourist traffic will be fully separated from local urban movement, removing one of the biggest delays on the current route.
Dharamshala and McLeodganj attract global tourists but the long drive discourages weekend travellers from Delhi-NCR. A 6-hour drive changes that equation entirely. Property hotspots along the route including Kangra, Gaggal, Una, Amb, and Shahpur are already seeing rising interest from resort brands, second home buyers, and hospitality businesses ahead of the September opening.
