A Delhi judge was found dead at his residence in the Green Park area, with police suspecting suicide. The deceased has been identified as Aman Kumar Sharma, son of Prem Kumar Sharma, aged around 30 years. He was serving as Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Karkardooma Court, Delhi.
A PCR call was received at the Safdarjung Enclave police station regarding the suspected suicide. The call was made by Shivam, son of Rajesh Sharma, a resident of Defence Colony and the brother-in-law of the deceased. “My brother has died by suicide in the bathroom at home,” he told the police. Police teams immediately rushed to the spot and found Aman Kumar Sharma inside the bathroom. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, according to India Today.
Initial investigations point to suicide, though the exact circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear. Police have initiated a probe while they await further details, including the postmortem report.
The father-in-law of Judge Aman Kumar Sharma’s sister said that, as per the statement given by his father to the police, around 10 pm last night Aman had called him saying he was distressed and that it had become difficult for him to continue living.
“I spoke to my son on the call who told me that they are taking Aman to Safdarjung Hospital. By the time I reached the hospital, the doctor had already declared him dead… As per the statement given by his father to the Police, around 10 pm last night, Aman had called him saying that he was distressed and it had become difficult for him to continue living. His father departed from Alwar right then and reached here around 12 in the night. Upon arriving, he learned that Aman had been having conflicts with his wife. He told his father that he had been harassed for the last two months. His wife (Swati) is a judicial officer, and her sister is an IAS officer (Nidhi Malik) currently posted in Jammu,” he said.
“According to Aman, Nidhi Malik had been interfering in his life, and she was controlling his household… Aman’s father said that his daughter-in-law told him that if you don’t leave from here, she would call the police,” he said.
“The next morning, Aman’s father tried to contact his daughter-in-law’s parents, but they had blocked his phone… Then an argument broke out in the house. So Aman’s father went to the other room. According to him, Swati was extremely angry and shouting, while Aman was crying,” he said.
“After a while, the noise stopped. He waited for a while, thinking that the argument had been resolved. When he went to check up on them after some time, he asked Swati about Aman’s whereabouts, to which she replied that she did not know. .. When he called Aman’s mobile, he heard it ringing inside the bathroom. He knocked on the bathroom door and asked him to open the door,” he said.
“During this, Yudhvir (Swati’s chacha) and Nidhi Malik arrived. They tried a lot, banged the furniture against the door, but the door didn’t open. Then the neighbours told them that there was a window in the shaft. So they got a ladder. The guard Shankar climbed the ladder, broke the window and entered the bathroom. He found Aman hanging… Aman was 30 years old,” he said.
In a separate incident
In another incident, last month, a 26-year-old advocate practising at the Delhi high court allegedly jumped to death from the 15th-floor balcony of a hotel in New Delhi’s Connaught Place on Sunday evening.
The deceased, a resident of Mahavir Enclave, also left behind a two-page suicide note in which he held nobody responsible for his death. Police said the deceased reached the 15th-floor balcony by cutting through a guard barrier, as the windows of his hotel room were sealed.
According to police, bottles of alcohol were found in his room. The family had been looking for him and had got to know that he was at the hotel. However, by the time they reached him, he had already jumped to his death from the hotel balcony.
Further details awaited as police investigate the matter.
