Delhi Imposes Complete Ban On Firecrackers Ahead Of Diwali

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has put a complete ban on all types of firecrackers in Delhi, lasting until January 1, 2025. This decision aims to control the city’s rising air pollution, which worsens during the winter season, especially around Diwali.

No Manufacturing, Selling, or Online Delivery Allowed

The ban covers the making, storing, and selling of firecrackers, including any deliveries through online shopping platforms. No firecrackers can be sold or delivered during this period.

Steps Taken to Protect Public Health

The DPCC said the ban is necessary to reduce high pollution levels in Delhi, which can be harmful to public health. Air pollution in the city gets especially bad in the weeks before and after Diwali due to firecrackers.

Delhi Police to Enforce the Ban

The DPCC has told the Delhi Police to make sure the ban is followed strictly. Police will also have to send daily reports to show how they are enforcing the rules.

Supreme Court Questions Lack of Action on Pollution

At the same time, the Supreme Court has criticized the central government, as well as Punjab and Haryana, for not doing enough to control air pollution in Delhi. The court especially pointed out that nothing has been done to stop stubble burning, which adds to Delhi’s poor air quality.

States Explain Reasons for Delay

Punjab said it needs financial help from the central and Delhi governments to buy crop management machines for farmers, who can’t afford them. Haryana explained that data on stubble burning isn’t available because of their recent state elections.

Air Pollution Levels Rise in Winter

Delhi’s air quality becomes much worse during the winter months, often reaching dangerous levels. The combination of firecracker use and stubble burning creates serious pollution issues, which is why strict measures like this firecracker ban have been put in place.
