Days ahead of elections, Punjab MLA hops between BJP and Congress, second time in a month

Days after joining the Congress, Punjab MLA Balwinder Singh Laddi has again parted ways with the party and rejoined the BJP on Friday.

Laddi, the legislator from Sri Hargobindpur in Punjab, had switched over to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Congress on December 28 in New Delhi.

He had joined the BJP in the presence of Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who is the Punjab in-charge of the party.

Laddi quit the saffron party on January 2 and went back to the Congress fold in the presence of AICC in-charge of Punjab affairs Harish Chaudhary and Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

The MLA’s frequent switch-overs come days ahead of the Assembly elections in Punjab.

The BJP, which had earlier played second fiddle in its more than two-decade long alliance with ex-ally Shiromani Akali Dal, is this time playing the role of senior partner in the alliance in Punjab.

Elections in Punjab will be held in single phase on February 20 to elect 117 members of the state Assembly. Punjab is likely to witness a five-cornered contest this election between the farmers’ political outfit, the BJP and its allies, Congress, AAP and SAD.
