Cybercrime Fraud: Mamata Banerjee’s MP becomes a victim of hacking, Rs 55 lakh stolen from High Court branch SBI bank account

Kalyan Bandyopadhyay, a Trinamool Congress MP from Serampore, has been the victim of cyber fraud. It is reported that Rs 55 lakh was stolen from his SBI bank account. According to sources, bank officials have filed a complaint with the cybercrime department in this matter.

Cyber Criminals Took Advantage of Dormant Account

The close aide of Mamata Banerjee, Kalyan served as the MLA for Asansol South from 2001-2006. At the time, he opened an account in his name at the State Bank of India (SBI) Assembly sub-branch, along with other MLAs. The sub-branch reports to SBI’s High Court branch. His entire MLA allowance was credited to that account. Kalyan is now a Member of Parliament. He had no transactions in the account during the Assembly for a long time. As a result, the account has become a ‘dormant account’ (a dormant account is one that has not been used for a long time). It is suspected that the fraudsters utilized that account to conduct fraud.

Mobile Number Used to Transfer Money

Kalyan’s primary account is at the SBI branch in Kalighat. The MP stated that on Thursday, he received a call from the High Court branch manager informing him of the fraud. It has been discovered that the MP’s photo and mobile number were used to first transfer Rs 55 lakh from the Kalighat account to the Assembly’s dormant account. The full amount was later taken out.

The news of the fraud has disappointed the Serampore MP. Here, though, he continued to make fun of the BJP. “If you keep money in the bank, the criminals will take it and if you keep it at home, Narendra Modi will take it,” he stated. The incident is being investigated by Kolkata Police’s Cyber Crime Department. The MP is hoping for a quick resolution.
