CRPF DIG says ‘border area peaceful’, but Assam Minister claims ‘Mizoram yet to withdraw people from the post

The ongoing border tensions between Assam and Mizoram have been quelled and situation in the area is now peaceful, Central Reserve Police Force DIG (Silchar Range) Shahnawaz Khan said on Thursday.

“The situation at the border area is peaceful. Central paramilitary troops have been deployed at the disputed borders. There is an improvement in situation. Both government (Assam and Mizoram) are in talks. Soon peace will be attained on the border. Currently, CRPF personnel are deployed in border area. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs is working to find a middle ground,” Khan said.

However, Assam Minister Ashok Singhal claimed that the Mizoram government has not yet withdrawn its police force from the disputed site.

“The MHA had ordered CRPF to be deployed. We have given our post to CRPF but Mizoram government has still not removed its people from the post, which is sad. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the dispute can be resolved by talks,” Singhal said.

He claimed that peace and harmony between the two states is yet to be attained.

“It feels like the Mizo people wish to settle the dispute via arms and ammunitions. If it is so, then, this approach itself is wrong. Also, six police officers of Assam Police were martyred during the clash while Mizoram officials continued to shoot LMG (light machine guns) at the disputed site. Peace and harmony between the two states is yet to be attained,” Singhal said, adding that Mizoram should understand people of both states “should live together and move forward together”.

The Mizoram government on Wednesday requested the Centre to intervene and claimed that said miscreants from Assam had removed railway tracks and blocked National Highway (NH) 306, disrupting transportation to the state.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla yesterday met Assam chief secretary Jishnu Baruah and his Mizoram counterpart Lalnunmawia Chuaungo as part of the Centre’s efforts to de-escalate the tension.
