The Supreme Court  granted interim protection to YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia from arrest in connection with the multiple FIRs lodged against him across India. FIRs were filed against Allahbadia for his recent inappropriate comments during India’s Got Latent show. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh heard the case and passed the interim order.

What Did Supreme Court Say?

Supreme Court, in its order highlighted that it is not turning blind eye to the obscene content on social media platforms like YouTube. The apex court asked the Centre, whether they want to something about such content. It added that the court would be happy if the government is willing to do anything on it.

“We would like you (government) to do something, if the government is willing to do something, we are happy. Otherwise, we are not going to leave this vacuum and barren area the way it is being misused by so-called YouTube channels and YouTubers..,” said Justice Surya Kant.

The Supreme Court further added that it should not overlook the importance and sensitivity of the issue.

Netizens React To Supreme Court’s Decision

It remains to be seen what the government does on this matter and what new rules will be brought in to the picture. However, netizens have expressed their views on the Supreme Court’s order. A user wrote on X, “A much-needed discussion!  The unchecked spread of obscene content on YouTube needs regulation without stifling creativity. Striking the right balance is key.” Another added, “Bring the goddamn censorship already..giving cheap internet to Dehat was a huge Mistake…Censor OTT, youtube and other SM apps to get rid of this filth. Chhapri Reels makers must be imposed with heavy fines.” A user, Barun Gupta said, ‘I am happy to know that SC has asked the government to suggest ways to regulate posting of improper content on the media including U-tube.”

Parliamentary Panel Writes To IB Ministry

Allahbadia’s comment had sparked widespread criticism and outrage across the country. The YouTuber was severely bashed by the netizens. The matter even echoed in the Parliament. Several leaders voiced concerns regarding the content published on OTT platforms and social media platforms. They reiterated that some restrictions needs to be there and some social media guidelines should be structured.

Taking forward the matter, the Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT) had written to Information and Broadcasting (IB) Ministry to provide a brief note regarding the proposed amendments in laws related to media to deter similar instances in the future. The committee noted that with the emergence of new forms of technology and media platforms, the Ministry should examine the need for strengthening measures.
