AIIMS (Delhi) Director Dr Randeep Guleria on Saturday said that there will be no shortage of vaccines in the coming days and that vaccines will be available in large amounts in “about two months”.

Addressing issues related to coronavirus with Chairman of Medanta Dr Naresh Trehan, the AIIMS chief said that India will soon get vaccines from outside as well.

“Vaccines will be available in large amounts probably in about 2 months’ time as companies that are making vaccines will start opening up their manufacturing plants, there will be more vaccine doses available. We will get vaccines from outside too,” he said.

Dr Guleria further said that people with comorbidities and elderly people should be vaccinated at the earliest.

“I still believe the chance of dying due to COVID19 is much higher in those with comorbidities and elderly, we should focus on trying to vaccinate them at the earliest and also look at the larger population who can be vaccinated in a graded manner,” he added.

The AIIMS chief further said that it is not possible to vaccinate the entire population in a day or two or a month.

“I think we should develop a strategy of giving appointments that could be two, three or four months later for younger age group and gradually work on strategy that more and more people can be vaccinated,” Dr Guleria said.

Meanwhile, Medanta chairman said that the gap between two vaccine doses should be six weeks in hotspots.

“Today it is not appropriate to panic for vaccine. I think the gap between vaccine doses should be 6 weeks in hotspots, but where cases are decreasing, the time between doses can be extended,” Dr Trehan said.

“People should isolate themselves as soon as they develop symptoms. Most people who have cough, cold, sore throat or fever mostly turn out to be positive. They should immediately isolate themselves. So that others can be protected,” he added.
