Congress, seeking suspension of Central Vista project, halts new capital construction work in Chhattisgarh

In an important decision, the Chhattisgarh government on Thursday decided to suspend construction work in the state’s new capital, Nava Raipur. The decision has been taken in view of the rising expenses due to the COVID-19 second wave.

The construction work at the new Governor’s house, Chief Minister’s house and the new Legislative Assembly building is being halted.

It was reported that the decision has been taken by Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel.

“Chhattisgarh CM has ordered to put on hold new construction works in Nava Raipur including the construction of the new Governor House, CM House and the new Assembly building due to the expenses arising out of the COVID19 situation and related issues,” news agency ANI reported.

“Chhattisgarh stops construction of major projects due to COVID-19 situation, cancels tenders for new state Assembly building,” news agency PTI said quoting an official order.

It may be noted here that the decision by the Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh government comes in view of the demands to halt construction work in the national capital related to the Central Vista project.

The Central Vista project in New Delhi involves the construction of a new Parliament building, the Prime Minister’s Office and other government ministries. The Opposition, primarily the Congress, has been demanding that the Narendra Modi government stop spending money on the Central Vista project amid the coronavirus pandemic and instead use the money to ramp up medical infrastructure, which has been left crippled by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, CM Baghel yesterday launched a “CGTeeka” web portal in order to make it convenient to register for the COVID-19 vaccination.

“CGTeeka has been launched for systematic vaccination of people in the age group 18-44 years. People with no cellphone/internet facility can also get their registration for COVID vaccination done via help desks established at panchayats, urban bodies, municipal corporations and other places,” an official statement released by the state government said.
