Congress scores big win in Karnataka Legislative Council polls; BJP vows strict action after cross-voting shock: ‘No question of forgiving…’

The Karnataka Legislative Council election has sparked a major political controversy, especially within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after alleged cross-voting by its own MLAs helped the ruling Indian National Congress (Congress) secure a big win. Out of seven seats, Congress won five, while the BJP managed just two. The Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) failed to win any seat.

The election result came as a surprise, as Congress received 151 votes, 11 more than the expected 140, clearly indicating support from legislators outside the party.

Why did cross-voting shake BJP and JD(S)?

Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra said the party has identified MLAs who voted against its official line. He claimed that at least 5–6 BJP MLAs and 6–7 JD(S) MLAs cross-voted. Calling it a serious act of indiscipline, he warned of strict action against those involved.

Vijayendra also said he would meet BJP President Nitin Nabin to decide the next course of action. The incident has raised concerns about internal divisions and dissatisfaction within the BJP’s state unit.

How did Congress turn the election in its favour?

Congress emerged as the biggest winner, with all five of its candidates, Thippannappa Kamknoor, PV Mohan, BK Hariprasad, Shivanna BS, and Vinay Karthik Prakash, getting elected. Party leaders see this as a major boost for Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and the state leadership.

What next for JD(S) before the 2028 elections?

JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy admitted that some MLAs cross-voted but said the number was lower than BJP’s estimate. He also indicated that some of these leaders might leave the party.

Despite the setback, Kumaraswamy said the party would focus on rebuilding and bringing in younger leaders. He described the result as a lesson ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections and stressed that the “real battle” lies ahead.
