China Urges India To View Each Other As Partners Amid Trump’s Trade Wars

China, in an apparent reference to US President Donald Trump’s tariffs, said unilateral actions threaten free trade and urged India to see it as a partner and not a rival and work together for peace, trust and joint development.

These remarks were made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who arrived in the national capital on Monday for a two-day visit.

“The world is undergoing a once-in-a-century transformation at an accelerating pace, unilateral bullying is rampant, and free trade and the international order are facing severe challenges. As two ancient civilizations and major emerging economies, China and India should establish correct strategic perception, regard each other as partners and opportunities rather than rivals or threats, devote their valuable resources to development and revitalization, and explore the correct way for neighboring major countries to respect and trust each other, live in peace, pursue development together, and achieve win-win cooperation,” he said.

Reiterating the need to maintain positive momentum in ties, Wang added that Beijing and New Delhi must build mutual confidence, seek common ground, resist external interference and expand cooperation.

“China and India should strengthen their confidence, meet each other halfway, eliminate interference, expand cooperation, and consolidate the momentum of improvement in China-India relations,” he added.

China To Discuss Boundary Issue

During his visit, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to hold a new round of Special Representatives’ dialogue on the boundary issue with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on Tuesday. He is also set to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi later that day.

US Tariffs On India

China’s statement comes at a time when India is facing some of the highest tariffs imposed by the US on any country. The US has imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on key Indian exports, citing New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil. India has defended this move, stating it is driven by market considerations and the need to safeguard energy security for its citizens.
