Captain Rohit Sharma kicks off preparations for WI series, returns to training

Rohit Sharma will be making his debut as the full-time captain of the ODI team against West Indies when Team India kicks off its 2022 home season in February. The India opener has been away from the game due to a hamstring injury and is now gearing up to make his comeback to competitive cricket.

Rohit has taken to Instagram and shared a pic after a training session. He was recently at the National Cricket Academy, where he was recovering from the hamstring issue. Rohit now seems to be fit and looks set to play his first international match of the year on February 6.

Rohit, who made his debut as full-time T20I captain in November 2021, was rested for the Test series that followed. He was named Virat Kohli’s deputy for the South Africa Test series and had also joined the team’s camp in Mumbai. But he suffered a hamstring injury. It also meant that he couldn’t play the ongoing ODI series.

Since Kohli has stepped down as the Test captain, Rohit is the frontrunner to take over the top job in the longest format too and could make his captaincy debut in the opening Test match against Sri Lanka in February. KL Rahul is another frontrunner to take over the job.

While Rohit will be making his comeback to the game next month, a few of the regulars could be rested for the 50-over matches. As per the schedule, the three ODIs will be played on February 6, 9 and 12 in Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Kolkata, respectively. The three T20Is will be played on February 15, 18 and 20.

All the fixtures could also be played at one venue due to the COVID-19 situation in the country. India is witnessing another wave of infection and recording over 2 lakh cases regularly.
